UPMC Presbyterian Hospital Hepatitis C

Pittsburgh Medical Malpractice Lawyers

As news of the Hepatitis C virus being spread by former medical technician David Kwiatkowski tears through the country, UPMC is being targeted as one of the main entities that is most negligent for the epidemic. After working at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in Wayne, Michigan, and St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, Kwiatkowski was hired at UPMC in March of 2008 through the Baltimore-based employment agency Maxim Staffing Solutions. He was fired from UPMC in May of 2008 when a co-worker accused him of stealing a syringe that contained an addictive painkiller, Fentanyl, but no action was taken to ensure Kwiatkowski would ever step foot into a hospital as an employee again. Instead, Kwiatkowski went on to work at 10 more hospitals around the country and may have infected thousands of people with the hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis C Symptoms Can Take Years To Present Themselves

Although it has been over four years since Kwiatkoski worked at UPMC Presbyterian, experts at the Mayo clinic have stated that symptoms stemming from hepatitis C often take a long time to present themselves. One of the deadliest viruses in the country, hepatitis C now kills more Americans than AIDS. If you have been diagnosed with hepatitis C, and you were a patient at UPMC or any other hospital where Kwiatkowski was employed, you may be entitled to compensation due to the negligence of UPMC and Maxim Staffing Solutions. Both parties should have alerted authorities and they should have informed the national accreditation organization for radiological technicians.
