Hays Medical Center Hepatitis C

Kansas Medical Negligence Cases

As the David Kwiatkowski story unfolds and more and more victims of hepatitis C are coming forward, the country has been watching and asking why someone was able to infect so many innocent people with the hepatitis C virus even years after he had been fired for stealing syringes while infected with Hepatitis C at Hays Medical Center.

Summary of Hepatitis C Test Results for Hays Medical Center as of October 24, 2012

Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas

Kwiatkowski worked at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas, from May 2010 to September 2010. One person who contracted Hepatitis C at Hays Medical Center filed a lawsuit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 3, 2012.

What Is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a deadly virus that infects the liver and usually leaves its victims with the liver disease cirrhosis. Soon after cirrhosis infects the liver, patients are generally diagnosed with wither liver disease or liver cancer. While hepatitis C can be treated, the symptoms generally do not show until a great deal of time after the victim has contracted the disease, thus making the patient much more difficult to successfully treat.

How Is Hepatitis C Transmitted?

Hepatitis C can be transmitted sexually, prenatally or orally. The most common form of transmitting the disease is being exposed to blood that is already infected with the hepatitis C virus. It is reported that Kwiatkowski stole syringes that were filled with an addictive pain killer, then after using the needle he would refill the syringes with water or saline. From the time Kwiatkowski was fired at UPMC in Pittsburgh until his last job at Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire, he had been fired one other time and left numerous other jobs when co-workers became suspicious of what they reported as drug-induced behavior.
