If you are going to Louisiana, watch for distracted drivers

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, but everyone should be on the alert for distracted drivers no matter what month it is.

While distracted driving is an ongoing problem all across the U.S., it is more of an issue in some states than in others: Louisiana, for example.

A study reveals distracted driving trends

An analysis of the driving behaviors of millions of motorists across the country focused on cellphone use. According to the results of the study from Life360, a driving safety service, drivers in the Southeastern United States are the most frequent users of cellphones, especially drivers in New Orleans. The study found that these motorists used their cellphones an average of 2.78 times per trip. In Miami, the frequency was 2.54 times per trip, and in Washington, DC it was 2.26 times per trip.

A high-risk activity

Texting, one of the main forms of distracted driving, requires at least five seconds of manual and cognitive attention, more than enough time for a disastrous collision to occur. In 2016, there were 3,450 fatalities nationwide in which distracted driving was a factor. The year before that, distracted drivers caused 391,000 injuries on the nation’s roadways. In its emphasis on the frequency of cellphone use, the 2017 Life360 study shows that this kind of distracted driving is still a major threat to the safety of all motorists.

Stay safe

It is not difficult for an experienced legal team to confirm that distracted driving was the cause of a vehicle crash. If necessary, outside experts can assist in an investigation. The next step will be to negotiate full and fair financial compensation on behalf of the victim. Obviously, you hope you will never experience a collision due to a distracted driver. However, keep the results of the Life360 study in mind, and if you are planning to drive to New Orleans, be especially alert for drivers holding cellphones.
