What gear do I need when riding a motorcycle?

Motorcycle helmets are crucial to protect riders, but this isn't where safety measures should end. There are other types of gear that also offer protection, and it's a must that riders are properly outfitted every time they ride their motorcycles. RideApart.com explains what you must wear to stay safe when on the road.

Motorcyclists should always make sure their legs are covered. However, regular jeans are not likely to offer ample protection in the event of a crash. When choosing pants, look for those with reinforced panels covering knees, shins, and hips. These are most likely to protect your legs from abrasions if you're involved in an accident. You also want to ensure that pants offer a good fit. They should be snug, but you should also be able to move your legs freely when riding. That way you can rest assured you can maneuver the bike correctly.

The same level of detail should also be evident in the jacket you choose. In this case, your best bet is a jacket made of leather or textile material. Motorcycle jackets should also be constructed in a certain way to ensure they can withstand a crash. Seams must be strong to ensure the jacket remains intact, so multiple stitches are quite common. Much like motorcycle pants, jackets should also contain armored paneling that covers certain areas. This includes the back, shoulders, and elbows.

When it comes to boots, proper ankle support is a must. Also, look for non-slip soles complete with an internal metal plate. This helps keep your boot intact if it's subjected to a great amount of force. You want to make sure that your books fit snugly and rest above the ankle. That way you won't need to worry about them flying off in the event of a crash.
