Common sense 101: Avoid a DUI accident at all costs

Drunk driving is still a persistent problem in Pennsylvania. Despite ad campaigns, many people either do not see the dangers or think they will be fine. Sadly, that is not always the case. In 2017 alone, more than 9,000 car accidents occurred as a result of driving under the influence, with many of them resulting in fatalities.

We're not here to tell you not to enjoy alcohol. But before you head out for an evening, plan ahead and use common sense about getting behind the wheel of your car. We know you've heard it all before, but with the statistics still heading in the wrong direction, we think it bears repeating that drinking and driving is never okay.

Use public transportation

You have already spent a lot of money on drinks, and you can save some money by taking the bus or subway, both of which are less expensive than a DUI. You can look up bus routes before you go out for the night, so you know exactly where to go when you have finished drinking at the bar.

Use Lyft or Uber

If you want a more personalized solution, then you can hail an Uber or Lyft from the bar. This has become an increasingly growing practice. It is easier and more affordable for people to use these apps compared to other options. With so many Uber and Lyft drivers around Philadelphia and the surrounding cities, you have no excuse to avoid using it.

Your ticket to avoiding a collision may be the simplest alternative available. If you live only a mile or so away from your home, then you may want to consider walking back to your house. You can walk back to the bar in the morning to get your car. You should only walk home if you can do so safely. You do not want to put yourself in danger trying to walk back when you have trouble standing up.
