Which features are important in motorcycle helmets?

If you're a new motorcyclist in Pittsburgh, you're probably excited to get on the road. Along with the fun and excitement, it's important for new riders to take the appropriate safety measures. Motorcyclists are at risk on the road when drivers fail to notice their presence, which is an all too common occurrence. That's why Esurance offers the following tips on finding a suitable helmet to protect you in the event of a crash.

Look for the DOT sticker

The Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews and inspects helmets to ensure they offer sufficient protection. If so, the DOT will place a sticker on the helmet, which guarantees riders that it meets all pertinent safety standards. Look for this sticker when shopping to rest assured that the helmet will hold up under the rigors of a motorcycle accident.

Make sure the chin strap is sturdy

Along with protecting the top portion of your head, helmets are also designed to offer protection to the jaw and chin. This is where a sturdy and reliable chin strap comes in. It should be riveted to the helmet, which prevents it from breaking loose during a crash. It should also be constructed from rugged material to prevent it from shearing.

Steer clear of unnecessary features

Novelty helmets, such as those with spikes or other features, might look cool but usually have little to offer in way of protection. Not only can features compromise the stability of the helmet, they may also increase the chance of injury during a wreck. In fact, the DOT stipulates that a helmet can't have any protrusions greater than two-tenths of an inch from the surface. Novelty helmets also lack sufficient padding, which is there to absorb the impact of a blow to the head.
