Understanding the severity of whiplash

Car accidents of any severity can result in substantial injuries. Six individuals had to go to local Pennsylvania hospitals after suffering injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Waynesboro.

One of the most common conditions people develop after a traffic collision is whiplash. This refers to the blow people experience when their necks jerk forward and then immediately backward, often striking the headrest. It may not seem like much, but many people suffer from severe injuries for weeks, months or even years due to the condition.

Recognize the symptoms

It may take several days for you to notice the signs of whiplash. You should see a doctor shortly after the crash. In the weeks that follow, take note of any of the following.

  • Neck stiffness
  • Limited range of motion in the neck
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness in the arms
  • Tinnitus
  • Vision problems
  • Depression and other mental health problems
  • Issues with concentration and memory
  • Injury to tissue, muscle, nerves and ligaments
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Sleep abnormalities
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the neck, back, arms or shoulders

These symptoms are generally more severe in senior citizens and people who have a history of neck problems. Occasionally, a concussion accompanies whiplash, so it is vital to recognize if you do not remember anything in the immediate aftermath of a car crash.

Pursue treatments right away

People have a higher likelihood of getting over the condition if they see a doctor as soon as possible. Most will find relief from whiplash after some time, but you can make things more comfortable for yourself by applying ice to the pained area. Painkillers can help in the short term, and your doctor may recommend wearing a neck brace. Ultrasound and massage have helped some find relief. Only in extreme circumstances will a person with whiplash require surgery. Whiplash does not have to upend your life, as long as you know what steps to take after a car accident.
