Pennsylvania tanker truck fire leads to injuries, road repairs

An accident involving a tanker truck in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, last Thursday sent two people to the hospital with critical injuries and required extensive repairs to an Interstate 95 off-ramp after the vehicle caught on fire.

It is not clear what the tanker was hauling or whether the cargo consisted of hazardous materials. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but authorities report that the tanker crashed late Thursday morning on the off-ramp linking northbound I-95 to Woodhaven Road and caught fire. Firefighters required hundreds of extra feet of hose, as well as a water tanker, to fight the blaze as there were no fire hydrants in the immediate vicinity of the interstate exit. Establishing a water supply to the scene required a delay of over an hour, during which time the fire spread to a nearby wooded area.

There was a passenger in the tanker truck who received critical injuries, as did the driver of the tanker. Medics transported both to a nearby hospital. No further information regarding their current condition is available.

The tanker truck crash and fire resulted in damage to the off-ramp requiring extensive repairs. Both the on-ramp and the off-ramp temporarily closed while the repairs took place, causing traffic snarls in the vicinity. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation estimated completion of the repairs by Friday evening, but no further updates are available.

Though the exact cause of this crash is unknown, the high center of gravity on a tanker truck makes it difficult to drive, and the size and weight of the vehicle can turn a crash involving one into a disaster. Those experiencing the disastrous effects of a truck accident may find it helpful to consult an attorney.
