Signs your Uber driver could cause an accident

Uber has made headlines for testing a new autonomous vehicle. Pennsylvania recently allowed these self-driving vehicles to resume testing on state roadways.

While safety concerns exist for such vehicles, passengers still need to watch out for accidents caused by Uber drivers. Most Uber motorists are extremely cautious, but you need to watch out for the signs your driver could cause an accident. There are certain behaviors no one behind the wheel should ever exhibit. If you notice the following in your Uber driver, then you need to get out the car right away before an accident occurs

The driver is upset

You should never drive in a heightened emotional state. Driving while angry or crying increases your risk of an accident because your mind is not on the road. Uber drivers have bad days like everyone else. However, they may not take the day off from driving because they need the money. A driver may tell you he or she recently went through a traumatic event, and if that is the case, then you should promptly get out and take another Uber.

The driver looks tired

Unlike other jobs that must give employees mandatory time off, Uber drivers can work 12 hours straight. It is easy for an Uber driver to tire out. Being on the road for most of the day can really take a toll. Some of the symptoms a driver is sleepy behind the wheel include:

  • Irritability
  • Moodiness
  • Poor concentration
  • Impaired hand-to-eye coordination
  • Limited ability to communicate

The driver seems hungover

It is rare for Uber drivers to drive drunk because they know they will lose their gig if a passenger reports them. However, some drivers do not see the harm in driving the following morning after a night of drinking. When your Uber driver wears dark sunglasses, keeps the windows rolled down and chews gum, you need to be cognizant of the fact he or she is could be hungover.
