The holiday rush causes workplace hazards

The holiday season means your company is rushing to maximize profits, but this desire to make profits may undermine your safety. According to the Harvard Business Review, occupational accidents are more common when employers face pressure to earn more, but earning expectations should not be more important than the wellbeing of workers.

Due to the risk of getting hurt at your job during the holiday months, it is vital for you to be aware of some potential workplace hazards. Here are some causes of occupational injuries during the holidays.

Rushing

The simple act of hurrying can result in a serious workplace accident. When your boss rushes you, you may miss important hazards, lack the patience to follow procedures or unintentionally create hazards. The chances of you receiving an injury increase when you do not have time to pay attention to your safety. While production is important, it is not worth you getting hurt.

Fatigue

You need sufficient sleep to function properly. Without enough rest, you cannot reach your peak performance. It is common to not sleep enough during the holiday season as you stress about shopping, decorating or attending events. Furthermore, your boss may have you working longer hours during this busy time of year, which can make you feel even more run down. Your employer should give you adequate breaks or tweak your work schedule so you do not get hurt because of seasonal fatigue.

Slips, trips and falls

The winter months bring snow, ice, rain and darker days. This makes it more likely for you to misjudge or miss a step when walking outside. Water and snow may find their way inside your workplace. Your employer should be diligent in removing these hazards and providing non-slip mats.

Talk to your employer about workplace safety during the holidays. Your health and safety should be the number one priority, even during the busiest time of year.
