How can I safely share the road with commercial trucks?

Driving on Pittsburgh roads can be even more of a challenge when large commercial vehicles are present. While it’s up to truck drivers to ensure they’re operating their vehicles safely, there are steps you can take to lower the risk of accidents occurring. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers the following tips in this case.

Keep your distance

Tailgating is a never recommended, but it’s especially bad when following behind a larger truck. This could leave you in a blind spot, or you could inadvertently slide under the truck if the vehicle stops suddenly. You should also remain a good distance back when stopped behind a truck, such as at a red light. Vehicles with manual transmissions often roll backwards when on a hill, which could result in an accident if your vehicle is too close.

Pass in front with caution

In the same token, take care when passing in front of a large truck or bus. It takes a lot more to stop these vehicles than a passenger vehicle. that means if you “cut off” such a vehicle, they could be unprepared to come to a complete stop. You may also be in a blind spot, in which case the driver of the larger vehicle may not even see your car until it’s too late.

Be careful when a truck is turning

It’s not uncommon for commercial vehicles to take wide turns. Accordingly, don’t attempt to squeeze by a turning vehicle or you may end up boxed in. Additionally, always obey signs that tell you where to stop when at a red light. If you move up too far you could be in the way of trucks coming from the opposite direction.
