Warm weather, motorcycle riders and safety concerns

In Pennsylvania, motorcycle owners bring their beloved bikes out as soon as the weather warms up. By summer, Harleys, Indians and Yamahas seem to be everywhere.

That makes safety a concern. Motorists must be watchful and always keep in mind that they share the road with motorcycle riders.

Accidents happen

When there are more motorcycles on the road, there are obviously going to be more crashes. In California, for example, there were almost 500 fatalities and 13,500 riders injured in 2015. In Pennsylvania that year, 176 deaths from motorcycle crashes were reported along with 3,040 injuries.

Staying alert

CHP officers in California remind riders to use their turn signals and to never drink and ride. Motorcyclists are also encouraged to do their best to stay out of blind spots. This is good advice for Pennsylvania riders, as well. Most motorcycle-car crashes are caused by drivers who do not see the smaller two-wheeled vehicles. Drivers get into the habit of looking for other cars and trucks, not motorcycles, but motorists have to do their part by being on the alert for riders. Because they present a smaller, less-visible object, riders are often the victims of motorcycle-car crashes, and a personal injury attorney will tell you that the injuries suffered by motorcyclists tend to be severe. Serious head injuries are common, which is why riders are encouraged to wear helmets, especially those approved by the Department of Transportation.

Safety first

In states like California and Florida that boast favorable weather all year round, motorcycles can be seen on highways and byways in any season, and in states like Pennsylvania, they are much in evidence come summer. Law enforcement officials always stress safety. Drivers have to be mindful of every kind of vehicle around them. Perhaps motorcyclists in Pennsylvania should spend the winter making their bikes more visible by adding LED lights and replacing their traditional black leather jackets with colorful wearing apparel so that when summer comes, they can enjoy a safer ride.
