3 symptoms of asbestos poisoning

Asbestos is a common yet highly toxic material that is found both naturally and unnaturally in many objects. Direct exposure can cause a host of ailments, though, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Each of these ailments has different symptoms, but exposure to asbestos in general can be tentatively identified by a few symptoms. It is imperative that you seek treatment if you have any of them.

The following are symptoms most commonly associated with asbestosis. Exposure can cause many other symptoms and ailments, so if you suspect that you have been in contact with asbestos, see a health care professional to ensure you are not sick.

1. Difficulty breathing

Asbestos commonly causes symptoms that affect the lungs and your ability to breathe. When inhaled, the crystals can become lodged in the lungs and cause symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and a feeling of tightness in the chest. If you are experiencing any difficulty breathing that coincides with possible exposure to asbestos, you should seek medical attention immediately.

2. Changes in hands

One of the more noticeable symptoms of asbestosis is the effect it has on hands. The ends of your fingers may become enlarged, for example, and take on a clubbed appearance. Your fingernails, too, might become deformed and appear to curl inwards. If you begin noticing any changes in the feeling or appearance of your hands, these abnormalities may be indicative of asbestos poisoning.

3. Fatigue and loss of appetite

Asbestos is poison that will ultimately affect your entire body. If you come in contact with this material, you can expect to experience a range of symptoms, but more than anything, you will likely feel exhaustion and loss of appetite. This fatigue might be one of the first symptoms you notice, so if you experience this in conjunction with other symptoms, you should certainly see a doctor.
