Do more people speed and drive drunk during nighttime hours?

There are many types of reckless behavior that remain too prevalent on roads across the country, but drunk driving and speeding are especially concerning. This reckless behavior endangers innocent lives and even the lives of those who make the poor decision to drive irresponsibly. Moreover, while responsible drivers may not be able to avoid an accident that is caused by this carelessness, it could be helpful to review statistics on this behavior to have a better understanding of when it is even more likely to occur.

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration has provided data from 2005 shows a clear link between the time of day and fatal drunk driving crashes. Out of the more than 15,800 people who passed away in nighttime wrecks during 2005, 60 percent passed away in accidents in which a driver’s blood alcohol level was .01 or greater. On the other hand, only 18 percent of fatalities during daytime hours involved a driver whose BAC level was .01 or above. Furthermore, the statistics on deadly accidents in 2005 show that more people passed away in crashes caused by speeding at night (37 percent) as opposed to speeding during the day (21 percent).

Clearly, there is a correlation between irresponsible behavior and the time of day. At night, people may feel as if they are less likely to be noticed or they may decide to behave irresponsibly for other reasons. If your life has been shattered by a reckless driver, you should explore your options regardless of the time of day that the accident happened.
