Educating teens on workplace injuries

Accidents in the workplace occur every day. When teens start their first jobs, they may be particularly susceptible to certain workplace injuries.

One of the best ways to prevent an injury is through information. There are a few key facts that young people should know about injuries in the workplace.

Common work hazards

When people think of a teen's first job, they do not usually associate it with danger. However, jobs often expose teens to dangerous situations. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Strains or sprains
  • Cuts
  • Burns

While some of the injuries may not be fully debilitating, they can result in missing out on school and work. It is important that young workers receive training about these dangers and the proper procedures to avoid injury.

Workers' compensation

Knowledge is power, and in order for teens to know how to obtain workers' compensation benefits, they must first understand what it is. The state provides information on employee rights, including workers' compensation. Teens should review the information and seek clarity on any questions they may have. Doing so will help them to know what to do to have a solid claim.

Filing process

Along with understanding the compensation in general, it is critical that people pay attention to the filing details. Improper filing can lead to the delay in the payment of a claim, or denial of the claim as a whole. Along with reviewing the policy procedures, it may be beneficial to consult a knowledgeable attorney.

These are a few key aspects that young adults should be aware of in regard to workplace injuries. Teens and their parents should take some time to gather employee rights information and review it. This provides a good basis to build off of and prepare in the case of a claim.
