Contaminated Devices May Lead to Deadly Infection After Open-Heart Surgery

Anyone who's had open heart surgery since 2011 should beware: You could have a deadly infection brewing in your chest. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning that a device commonly used to heat and cool the blood during open-heart surgery may be contaminated with a nasty bacteria Mycobacterium chimaera. Sort of like the movie Alien, the bacteria can quietly grow over weeks or months, creating a sticky film around your heart that can eventually cause all sorts of complications including death, which is not good.
