How likely is a misdiagnosis?

A misdiagnosis can be devastating on many levels. Emotionally, it can be a roller coaster. Imagine being told that you don't have cancer, which is elating news, only to find out later that you've had it all along. From a medical standpoint, it can also be hugely problematic. For instance, if your cancer treatments are delayed by a year because your doctor didn't think there was a problem, an easily treatable condition could become fatal.

So, what is the likelihood that this will happen to you? Though every case is different, statistics show that about 15 percent of medial issues are not diagnosed properly the first time.

Obviously, these stats may not all connect to dire situations. A doctor may tell you use don't have strep throat, only to find out that you do when your symptoms don't clear up, putting you on medication a few days late. While frustrating, you're not in a terrible situation.

However, that rate does speak volumes about how the visit to the doctor can impact your life when dealing with more serious conditions.

To find out what was misdiagnosed most often, a study was carried out back in 2013. Some of the top conditions on the list include the following:

-- Urinary tract infections -- Congestive heart failure -- Pneumonia -- Cancer -- Acute renal failure

No matter what good intentions your doctor has or what his or her track record looks like in Pennsylvania, mistakes do happen. Errors are made. If you've suffered as a result, you may be able to seek financial compensation in the wake of such an incident.
