What treatment options are available for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that forms on the thin tissues that protect the lungs and abdomen. Each year, there are about 3,000 cases of the disease diagnosed and most of the people who suffer from the disease were exposed to asbestos in their jobs.

Symptoms of mesothelioma can take 20 to 50 years to appear and there is currently no cure. However, there are treatment options. The three most common treatments are:

-- Surgery

-- Chemotherapy

-- Radiation therapy

An approach called multimodal therapy has improved the survival rates. This is when at least two of the treatments are used at the same time.

There are three types of surgeries that can be used to treat mesothelioma. Diagnostic surgery is used to determine how far along the disease is. Palliative surgery is used to relieve some of the symptoms of the disease, restoring some quality of life to the patient. Potentially curative surgery is major surgery and is done to remove tumors to extend the patient's life expectancy.

Radiation and chemotherapy help shrink the tumors that can cause pain and breathing problems. The tumors can press on your airways, veins and nerves.

There are also alternative treatments that some patients find helpful, such as yoga, acupuncture and massage therapy. Some clinical trials are available and these experimental treatments can make a difference for the patient.

The types of treatment available will depend on the patient's overall health and what stage the disease is in.

If you or a loved one suffer from mesothelioma, you may be entitled to compensation. A lawyer can provide information on your legal options for pursuing compensation in court.
