4.5 million pounds of Pilgrim's Pride chicken recalled

When a consumer makes a purchase, he or she expects the product to be able to be used as intended without experiencing any illness or injury. When injury or illness does occur because of an unsafe or defective product, that person may be able to seek compensation from the manufacturer of the item, as well as other defendants. Claims might include those for pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and more.

In order to prevent illness or injury, one company is recalling a massive amount of fully cooked chicken products -- 4.5 million pounds. The products are sold under the brand names of Pierce, Gold Kist Farms and Sweet Georgia. These products include chicken patties, whole-grain breaded chicken nuggets, chicken breakfast patties, popcorn-style chicken varieties and chicken tenderloins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the chicken products could contain "extraneous materials." The materials might be wood, plastic, metal and rubber.

Pilgrim's Pride Corporation, which is located in Waco, Texas, shipped the affected products across the country. To find a full listing of the products that are affected, visit the USDA's website.

Customers began complaining to Pilgrim's Pride that there were plastic pieces in the chicken nuggets. The company advised the USDA. The Food Safety and Inspection Service inspected more of the chicken products and also found more extraneous materials. While no one has reported any ill health effects from eating the chicken products, consumers are advised to return the product or throw it away.

If you have been injured by a product that was defective or otherwise unsafe, an attorney can offer guidance on your next steps.
