What is the diagnositic process like for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer that many people might already know is linked to asbestos exposure. This is a deadly cancer that is usually managed with symptom treatments instead of trying to "beat" the cancer. Understanding how mesothelioma is diagnosed is an important bit of knowledge for those who are facing the process.

What usually begins the diagnostic process?

The diagnostic process usually begins because a person is complaining of symptoms of mesothelioma, which we discussed in a blog post last week. This is usually handled during a regular trip to the doctor. If the doctor suspects that the person has mesothelioma, imaging tests and other diagnostic tests might be ordered.

What types of tests are used to diagnose mesothelioma?

Chest X-rays, CT scans, PET scans, echocardiograms, and MRI scans are the most commonly used imaging scans used to diagnose mesothelioma. These might be done in conjunction with blood tests to check for mesothelioma markers. In addition, fluid samples and tissue samples might be obtained through biopsies for testing. If pulmonary mesothelioma is suspected, pulmonary function tests might be ordered.

What happens after testing?

After the required testing is complete, the doctor will review the results and let the patient know if a diagnosis of mesothelioma is appropriate. If the testing points to mesothelioma, the next steps will be discussed. This often includes measure to help keep the patient comfortable.

When mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, it is possible to seek compensation. Not only can this help to cover the cost of the medical care, it can also help to cover other expenses that come up while you are living out your life with mesothelioma.
