Anoxic brain injuries could be caused by medical malpractice

Pennsylvania residents may be aware that medical malpractice can often lead to brain injuries. However, they may not know what types of brain injuries it can cause. One type of serious brain injury one can suffer is anoxic brain injury.

Anoxic brain injuries involve a lack of oxygen being supplied to the brain. When this occurs, brain cells can die, and permanent brain damage can happen in as little as five minutes. This type of brain injury is often caused by stroke, cardiac arrest, brain tumors, choking and anesthesia accidents, and recovery depends on the level of oxygen deprivation suffered.

Anoxic anoxia, otherwise known as altitude sickness, occurs when air is too thin and does not contain enough oxygen for the body to properly function. It can become toxic if toxins are inhaled that stop the body from processing oxygen. If a person does not have an adequate supply of hemoglobin, anemic anoxia can occur. This happens when the chemical present in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the brain is in short supply.

While barbiturates can slow brain activity and allow brain cells to recover, they can also be a cause of asphyxia. They also cannot reverse damage already done by a lack of oxygen.

Someone who has suffered from an anoxic brain injury or any other type of brain injury because of a doctor or hospital error may wish to hire a lawyer. A lawyer could help file a medical malpractice claim on behalf of their client and help to prove that the injury was the direct result of the error.
