Bizarre recommendation leaves 23-year-old without any teeth

Imagine you go to your dentist to have a regular check-up and cleaning, and during the visit, it is discovered that you have an issue with one of your teeth. The issue will require surgery, and you'll lose the tooth -- as well as a few others -- but your mouth should be okay. At least, this is the way it’s playing it out in your mind.

But when you come back to get this procedure done to remove a few of your teeth, you are prompted with some horrifying news by your dentist: the condition may be bad enough that all of your teeth need to be removed in order to prevent a potentially fatal situation.

What would you do in this scenario? You would probably agree with the dentist -- who has experience and knowledge that you don't -- and accept the loss of all your teeth, right?

This is what happened to a 23-year-old man, except that the dentist's recommendation appears to have been wrong, if not uninformed. The 23-year-old had an abscessed tooth that had to be removed, in addition to three nearby teeth to ensure the condition was fixed. But his dentist, without taking or checking an X-ray of the young man, advised him to have all of his teeth removed.

As it turned out, 28 of those teeth were healthy and embedded in healthy gums. The dentist's recommendation was made because the 23-year-old could have developed severe blood poisoning. The 23-year-old is suing the dentist for malpractice.
