$62 million ruling upheld for women victimized by botched surgery

The following story didn't happen here in Pittsburgh, but it doesn't matter where it occurred for it to inspire sympathy for the victimized patient. A 33-year-old single mom recently had a $62 million medical malpractice verdict in her favor upheld by the New York Supreme Court. The decision was challenged by a hospital and three doctors after the woman's life was changed forever due to a botched surgery.

In 2009, the woman went in for laparoscopic surgery, which is a gynecological procedure. During the course of her surgery, her colon was punctured causing some major medical complications that caused her to suffer three separate incidents of cardiac arrest. She also partially lost her hearing and had to have both of her legs amputated below the knee.

Her life will never be the same, and he undoubtedly lives with physical and mental pain from this tragic ordeal. The $62 million verdict is indicative of the terrible suffering she has had to endure, and the unchanged nature of the ruling even after an appeal further supports the terrible circumstances of this surgical error.

This story shows just how catastrophic the consequences can be when a surgeon or a hospital fails to uphold the highest standards of medical care. A surgical mistake could be something minor that has relatively little impact, or no impact, on the patient -- or it could be a terrible error that leaves the patient in a serious or fatal state. Such medical negligence, no matter how severe, is unacceptable and the affected patient should consider his or her legal options.
