Suit says gynecologists sprayed drain cleaner solution into woman

In a case that may interest medical malpractice attorneys in Pittsburgh and elsewhere, a woman accused her gynecologist of spraying her internally with drain cleaner chemicals instead of vinegar during a colposcopy, which is a routine examination of a woman's reproductive organs. She called the experience pretty horrific. The alleged mistake happened during the part of the procedure in which the patient's cervix is supposed to be sprayed with vinegar or other acetic acid to help the doctor spot any abnormalities.

The lawsuit alleged that the woman's gynecologist used a spray bottle that was marked as containing vinegar to shoot liquid inside her vagina. The woman said she immediately felt horrible burning and pain, like an open cut that had rubbing alcohol poured onto it. The doctor asserts that he thought that what he sprayed into her vagina was a liquid containing vinegar as indicated. The facility for which the doctor worked denied other allegations made in the lawsuit.

The woman charged that, instead of vinegar, the liquid contained potassium hydroxide, which is one of the active chemicals in drain cleaning solutions. The strong alkaline of potassium hydroxide was the opposite of the gentle acid found in vinegar. The woman's husband explained that a base soaks in and burns tissue from the inside out. He said it was never meant to go inside a person's body.

Victims of doctor errors constituting medical malpractice may find a court of law to be the right place to seek redress of their grievances. A medical malpractice attorney may be helpful in filing a lawsuit to seek compensation for damages from a medical error such as a failure to treat infections, leading to worsened conditions.
