Family awarded $2.5 million in medical malpractice lawsuit

Pennsylvania family members who believe that a loved one died as a result of medical malpractice may be interested to learn that a family in Hawaii was awarded a $2.5 million settlement for the loss of their loved one. According to the report, the family claimed that their family member's toe infection ultimately caused his death after he received negligent treatment.

The 33-year-old man reportedly went to the Nanakuli clinic in January 2011 with a swollen lump between his toes on his left foot. He was prescribed an antibiotic for the infection. He returned the next day after experiencing pain in his left hip and thigh, as well as a headache and crusty, swollen eyes. He was then sent to the emergency room, was prescribed painkillers and was told to continue taking the antibiotic.

The lawsuit claimed that the man returned to the clinic five more times. He continued to suffer from severe headaches, pain in his eyes and legs, nausea, vomiting and a rash. He eventually entered the ER on Jan. 12 of 2011. Doctors there determined that he was suffering from renal and liver failure. He was transferred to the Queen's Medical Center, where he died on Feb. 20, 2011. In the lawsuit, his family members stated that his multi-organ failure resulted from him being allergic to the antibiotic.

While most believe that their healthcare providers do everything that they can to help their patients, there are cases where doctors make a medical error. These errors could cause further injury that may even result in death. If a medical error is suspected, the injured person or surviving family members may be eligible to seek compensation by filing a medical malpractice lawsuit. A medical malpractice attorney may be able to help these people gain compensation, so they could cope with increased medical bills and loss of income.
