Medical errors kill more people than car accidents

Pennsylvania residents may be interested to learn the staggering statistics regarding medical errors in the United States. Medical errors are actually the third leading cause of death in the country. With an estimated 400,000 deaths resulting from a medical error every year, medical malpractice attorneys are well aware that this is a serious problem.

In a 2000 article, the Journal of the American Medical Association grouped medical error deaths into various categories. Among them, hospital infections accounted for 80,000 deaths each year and adverse reactions to medications killed about 106,000. Other categories included unnecessary surgery, which kills 12,000 people per year, and medication errors, which kills 7,000 people per year.

Despite being one of the few countries in the world with advanced medical technology, the overall results for patients in the United States tend to be the same as countries without access to modern medical treatment. Many people believe that pharmaceuticals play a big role in generating such poor statistics. In the United States, pharmaceutical drugs are generally more accessible than other countries. Because these drugs come with the risk of side effects, hospitals tend to be more risky places.

Unfortunately, many people visit the hospital with one medical problem and walk out with a new one. After suffering from a doctor error, victims often require more treatment, putting them at risk for even more complications. Patients who become trapped in a medical nightmare like this may choose to seek the aid of an attorney with experience in medical malpractice litigation. The attorney may file a personal injury lawsuit and seek compensation for the patient's pain and suffering.
