Negligence, recklessness alleged in building collapse

The first negligence lawsuit on the behalf of a woman has been filed after a highly publicized building collapse in Philadelphia at the beginning of June. The woman, along with 12 others, was injured after the workplace accident on June 6 when the building was crushed as another building next door was torn down. Six people, including one man and five women, lost their lives during the accident. The victim was working as a clerk when the building fell.

Several defendants were named in the lawsuit, including the owner of the building that was initially demolished, his company, the destruction contractor and his firm. The lawyer who is handling the case has been working in the field of construction law for years and called the accident 'egregious." The lawsuit alleges that negligence and gross recklessness on the part of the named parties led to the building's collapse.

The lawyer asked the courts to leave the site as is so that he can send investigators to examine the scene. A judge agreed to his request and awarded him the right to look over the scene as long as all parties involved remained safe and did not hamper the investigation. However, she asked for a delay to ensure the site is safe and gave the plaintiffs two days for the inspection. In addition, the judge ordered all related paperwork to be preserved for further review. A number of agencies were looking into the accident, including city, local and federal agencies. All of the injured victims were working or shopping at the facility.

After a highly publicized building collapse, the victims may be struggling to recover from both their physical injuries and the trauma of the accident. A workers' compensation attorney might be able to help clients pursue legal action.
