Child abuse charges filed against Pennsylvania teen and couple

State police in northern Pennsylvania arrested a couple and teen for separate criminal acts involving the same victim. Authorities said a Bradford County couple forced a girl to stay in an improvised cage. In the second case, a male teen was charged with the developmentally-disabled girl's sexual abuse.

Felony charges of aggravated indecent child assault and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse were brought against the 18-year-old man, who shares the same last name as the couple. Investigators would not reveal whether the teen was related to the couple or the 12-year-old alleged victim. Police also refused to elaborate on the nature of the girl's relationship to the couple.

Authorities said the child lived in a homemade cage attached to a crib. The girl with cerebral palsy slept in a converted closet in the couple's bedroom where troopers said the girl was locked for long periods.

The couple is charged with child endangerment and false imprisonment.

The girl told police she was confined to the cage-crib since she was 10. The experience overlapped with the time troopers said the child became a sex crime victim. The young defendant was a minor when police say he took nude pictures of the girl and had sex with her.

The victim's "caretakers" told investigators they confined the girl to keep her from accessing medications or other potentially harmful products. The couple also admitted locking the child in the closet while they were at work so other children in the house would not have to care for the girl.

The 55-year-old husband in custody has been a registered sex offender since a 2004 Bucks County conviction on multiple charges involving minors. The man was imprisoned and then released under house arrest in 2005.

A liability attorney could help the child receive rightful compensation for the harm caused by all three alleged abusers. Damages could be awarded for her extreme physical and psychological suffering.
