Medical malpractice lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania over stent

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a doctor, a hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Health System for placing an unnecessary stent in her. The Pennsylvania hospital admitted to her that her cardiologist may have placed a small mesh tube used to prop open clogged blood vessels within her when she may not have actually needed it. In fact, Penn notified numerous patients, federal authorities and state regulators that a review they conducted revealed that around 20 patients may not have needed the stents they received.

The doctor who placed the stent has given up practicing medicine at Penn. However, he says he is now seeking medical malpractice attorneys to sue the hospital on the premise that its actions have jeopardized his ability to continue practicing elsewhere.

The doctor placed the stent in the woman after she experienced shortness of breath. She later received a letter from the hospital stating that although her treatment case was not one that was evaluated in the review, they simply wanted to notify her of their findings. She was offered a free evaluation, which she accepted. Based on the evaluation, they concluded that her stent "appeared to be inappropriate" based on the narrowing of her blood vessel. The woman's medical malpractice suit accuses the doctor of negligence, fraud and misrepresentation and seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

People attempting to file medical malpractice lawsuits would do well to seek the counsel of a medical malpractice lawyer who may be able to help them determine whether or not they have the grounds to file such a lawsuit. Such lawyers may also help them gather the evidence they need to prove their claims and win their cases.
