Asbestos blamed for 3,000 deaths annually nationwide

Asbestos has been used in thousands of products, but its use has been much more limited during the past 40 years. Though a main concern about significant exposure to asbestos is the possibility of contracting mesothelioma (that affects the lining of the lungs and the abdomen), asbestos has also been tied to lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and laryngeal cancer, and has been loosely tied to cancer of the esophagus, gallbladder, kidney and throat.

There is any number of asbestos fibers, but all such fibers are known to cause mesothelioma. Once fibers have been inhaled, there is a chance that these substances will become lodged in an organ and remain there for a lifetime. And though there are now alternative products that can be used in replace of asbestos, the asbestos already used in buildings will have to be removed - which contains its own set of dangers.

The reason why attorneys continue pursuing manufacturers of asbestos is because asbestos exposure was tied to mesothelioma as early as the 1940s. However, knowledge concerning the dangers of asbestos exposure has not prevented workers from continually being exposed to asbestos as a part of their jobs.

Mesothelioma continues to be the cause of more than 3,000 deaths per year in the United States, and a majority of these deaths were due to workplace asbestos exposure. This would include miners, construction workers, railroad employees and naval workers. Many of the workers most likely to face such exposure would include many that live in Pittsburgh and the greater Pennsylvania area.
