Pennsylvania-based company cited for slip-and-fall hazard

Pennsylvania companies have a responsibility to keep their workplaces as safe as possible for their employees in order to prevent accidents that result in injury or death. Unfortunately, not all companies adhere to the standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In fact, in one year, 240 people died in Pennsylvania because of work-related injuries.

Recently, OSHA cracked down on one Pennsylvania-based company, Tub City IMS, LLC, after one worker was injured and another worker was killed in a tragic occupational accident. In October, the two men were struck by a steel counterweight when it broke off of a piece of machinery. They were trying to remove the counterweight from the machinery at the time. One of the workers, 58, died. The other suffered injuries.

OSHA investigated the accident and found that the facility had exposed workers to a slip-and-fall hazard. OSHA also cited Tube City for allowing workers to be "struck by hazard from gravity." The company has been fined $14,000 and has 15 days to pay the fine or contest the citations.

While this accident did not happen in Pennsylvania, the facility in which it happened is owned by a Pennsylvania company and shows just how important it is for companies in our state and elsewhere to ensure that all of their workplace facilities are in top condition. When workers become exposed to slip-and-fall hazards or other dangerous conditions, devastating accidents can happen. In situations like this, it's important for victims and their families to know that there are legal options for holding an employer accountable. Whether through a workers' compensation, premises liability lawsuit or other legal action, there are ways to seek compensation for the damage caused.
