Industrial accident crushes veteran employee to death

A man from Wilmerding died earlier this week as a result of an industrial accident at Hempfield Industrial Park. The employee had been with the company, Plum Corp., for about three decades; the company produces metal roofing and siding products that are used in both industrial and commercial settings. About 15 people work at the plant, but none of them witnessed the accident.

The worker was using a 15-ton overhead crane in an attempt to move a 5-ton steel coil. As the crane began lifting the coil, another extremely heavy coil slid off a stack of coils and pinned the worker against another stack of coils. The 60-year-old worker was found by his fellow employees, but it was too late to save him.

As people who work with heavy machinery know, working in an industrial setting can be extremely dangerous work. It was not immediately clear if proper safety procedures were followed in the maneuver the worker was attempting. However, as a 30-year employee, he may have performed the procedure numerous times.

Because he had worked there for so long and was approaching retirement age, it seems likely that the man's family was dependent on him for their income and standard of living. An employee who is injured at work is often eligible for workers' compensation as a result of the event; in the event of a fatal accident, the survivors of the worker may be entitled to benefits. An experienced attorney can work with a family who is facing a challenging situation such as this.
