Possible treatment for mesothelioma being researched

Individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma are generally treated using radiation, chemotherapy and various surgical techniques. Sadly, none of these modes of treatment have proven successful.

Since the prognosis is so poor for treating mesothelioma, patients may look for alternative types of treatment that are even riskier than traditional methods for treating the disease. That is why an experimental gene therapy treatment that was conducted upon a 6-year old Pennsylvania girl may prove to be instructive.

The girl suffering from leukemia had twice undergone chemotherapy, but in both circumstances the cancer returned after the treatment was completed. The girl's parents then turned to the University of Pennsylvania that had been researching alternate treatments for cancers such as mesothelioma.

The girl's white blood cells that attack malignant cancer (known as T-cells) were reengineered by a disabled HIV virus that therapists would hope make the white blood cells more aggressive in attacking the cancer. Though the treatment was extremely risky and came very close to killing the young girl, there is now hope that the treatment was successful in that the girl remains cancer free some seven months after the treatment took place.

Obviously, such a treatment provides hope for many individuals that are suffering from various cancers. However, that individuals would need to resort to such a drastic treatment merely to survive indicates just how devastating illnesses like mesothelioma can be.

Attorneys representing individuals afflicted with mesothelioma have so far mostly sought compensation for the suffering the victims and their families have gone through. In the future, compensation may also be sought that could eventually be used to help victims receive therapy that will allow them to survive.  Though paying for such therapy will likely be expensive, it would likely be far less costly than the wrongful death verdicts that companies have paid out upon.

These individuals suffering from mesothelioma deserve the best of care. None of them chose to be in the position that they are in, and their circumstances almost always came about due to the negligence of others.

Hopefully, additional breakthroughs concerning treatment will come in the very near future.
