Mothers injured during childbirth is on the rise

A recent study of birth injuries has provided a startling result. Birth injuries due to child delivery greatly increased for mothers during the first decade of this century. Emergencies involving cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and even kidney failure went up by around 75 percent.

This increase does not completely revolve around medical malpractice. Pregnant women that are older, obese or suffer from other medical conditions have greatly increased. However, complication due to severe bleeding following childbirth has also been on the rise.

There has been a 60 percent increase in the number of Cesarean sections conducted since 1996. Though Cesarean sections are often medically necessary, there are risks that are associated with this procedure as well. Because of this, physicians have to take much more care when recommending this procedure to women.

As in all medical procedures, doctors have a duty to keep up with medical changes. When procedures became routine, doctors have to make certain that these sorts of procedures can be performed safely without endangering the health of the patient. Otherwise, these same doctors will be named by attorneys in medical malpractice lawsuits.

Because complications during childbirth can be so severe, medical staff needs to be prepared in the event that an emergency does take place. Though past efforts in medical safety during childbirth have focused upon the infant, medical staff also needs to attend to focus in on safety for the mother as well.

It is estimated that medical complications for the mother result in hospital costs of $17.4 billion every year. This does not include medical malpractice payouts that sometimes result in verdicts in the millions of dollars. Safety procedures and programs by medical providers can come at a much lower price.
