Manufacturer of Zoloft sued for wrongful death

A couple has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Pennsylvania courts against Pfizer, Inc. over the drug Zoloft. It has been claimed by the couple that the wife's ingestion of the drug during pregnancy led to the death of their newborn child soon after the child was born.

It is asserted that the child was born with a variety of severe birth defects that came about because of the taking of Zoloft. The defects in question included malformations of the brain, hydrocephalus and pulmonary hypoplasia.

As occurs with some drugs and not with others, the risks of birth defects are present. However, as so many drugs do pose these sorts of risks, drugs and the generic equivalents should be thoroughly tested before marketed to the public. In those cases when the risks cannot be eliminated, there is a duty on the part of the company to warn doctors and consumers to not take the medication while pregnant.

It's not surprising that some businesses attempt to conceal information that could lead to less in sales. Still, when this approach is taking to the sale and manufacturing of drugs, consumers may end up taking the drugs based without sufficient information regarding the drug's dangers.

The purpose of product liability suits brought by clients and their attorneys is to keep companies from profiting off of practices that injure consumers. Without such suits, information regarding a drug's side effects may never be made known to the public.

Consumers have the right to know all the foreseeable dangers of a drug before it is actually taken.
