Radiology mistakes common in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has earned the dubious distinction for being one of the top states in having radiologists sued for medical malpractice. Generally such errors came about due to a failure to diagnose a particular syndrome, but errors were also reported concerning procedural complications, miscommunications or the failure to recommend further testing.

Common syndromes that were most commonly misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all include non-spinal fractures, spinal fractures, lung cancer and vascular disease. The failure to diagnose breast cancer was the most common claim made against radiologists.

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in Pittsburgh and across the United States. Therefore, we cannot afford for such medical mistakes or misdiagnosis to take place. Attorneys need to hold radiologists accountable the same as any other doctor because of the important role radiologists can play.

Hospitals are staffed with a variety of personnel that each plays a vital role in the treatment of patients. But because of each individual's importance, inadequate training or a single mistake by any of these individuals could lead to negligence involving the hospital.

One such role played by hospital staff would be the radiologist. Radiologists have played an ever increasing role in recent years concerning the diagnosis of certain medical conditions and this role is to increase further in the coming years. Unfortunately, radiologists themselves have not always been up to their task.

With our advanced technology, radiology plays an important role in treating any patient since these technicians are often the ones first alerted to a problem. If the problem is not properly diagnosed, no treatment of a person's condition can begin.
