Asbestos and lead removal following Hurricane Sandy

When manufacturers of home used lead paints and asbestos in its building materials, there seemed to be little foresight what would happen when these materials eventually became exposed. Most likely, builders presumed that such an occurrence would never happen.

However, with Hurricane Sandy striking many coastal states including Pennsylvania, many homes were damaged due to the unusual weather conditions. Now homeowners are being warned of a number of hidden health hazards that may come to the forefront because of damage that was done.

The concern is that many individuals will try to make repairs on their own to save costs. However, when making such repairs, these owners may also be exposed to asbestos contained within the walls or the pipe fittings. The fear is that homeowners will be sickened by exposure to mold, lead or asbestos.

Without the proper attire when removing these materials, individuals could be exposing themselves to a number of respiratory problems. Also, a number of contractors are also attempting to take advantage of the situation while not abiding by safety regulations for its workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have already fined a number of contractors that have placed their workers at risk regarding various health dangers.

Lawsuits will be brought by attorneys to hold those responsible for exposing others to asbestos and lead liable for possible injury. Unfortunately, too often workers and individuals are placed at risk because employers try to go cheap as far as safety is concerned. However, when it comes to dangers like lead and asbestos exposure, the risks are so extreme that every cent paid to insure safe removal of these substances is absolute required.
