Pennsylvania town center of asbestos study

The University Pennsylvania School of Medicine has been conducting a study on a small Pennsylvania town concerning the affects of asbestos upon that town's population. It has been reported that a factory operating in the community for over 100 years caused the residents there to be exposed to asbestos.

A doctor at the school was particularly interested in the lag time between exposure and the time that individuals suffered from asbestos related injury or disease. There appears to have been a number of individuals in the community that suffered from cancer, and the researchers would like to interview the various residents about their thoughts and concerns.

If we wonder why so many lawsuits have been filed and why the verdicts returned have been so large, we only have to look at how prevalent mesothelioma has become. When a problem is so well known that an entire community is being studied, it seems obvious that the manufacturers of the asbestos should have known about such problems as well.

The medical school received a grant to conduct a 5 year study documenting the lives of those affected by the exposure to asbestos. Hopefully something positive will come about due to this study.

Unfortunately, there has been little positive news that has come out where asbestos exposure is concerned. This community has been particularly affected by mesothelioma - a type of cancer of the lung that has no known cure. Besides being irreversible, the onset of mesothelioma often occurs years after asbestos exposure has taken place. Also, the only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.
