Illinois reports 2nd case of fungal meningitis

A Chicago resident has been treated and is recovering after reporting symptoms of fungal meningitis. This case is the second to be reported in the state of Illinois. The patient had received an injection from one of the three APAC Centers for Pain Management that had received a shipment of contaminated steroids from a specialty pharmacy in Illinois.

The New England Compounding Center is still under investigation after distributing three lots of tainted methylprednisolone acetate, injectable steroids for pain. They have stopped all production and recalled all of their products. Two other pharmacies in Massachusetts are also under investigation. Ameridose, sister company to the NECC, has also recalled all of their products as well. 23 states received shipments of the steroids and so far over 300 cases have been reported and 29 deaths. There was a list published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of each office that received a bad batch of the steroids.

Patients had received the injections for pain and have been developing fungal meningitis because of a greenish-black fungus that was found in the vials. Patients are also at risk for peripheral joint damage if they received injections in their shoulder, knees or joints. Long term damage can occur and even result in joint replacement surgery.

Symptoms of fungal meningitis have been reported from one to four weeks after getting an injection. Although symptoms are milder than the other types of meningitis they are similar. They include fever, headache, pain and swelling at the injection site, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, slurred speech and changes in vision.
