Family of worker awarded $3 million for asbestos-related death

A General Motor's worker's family has settled out a wrongful death case for $3 million. It is reported that the worker died of an asbestos-related disease.

The worker had been employed by General Motors for 36 years, and for approximately 15 years he repaired valves manufactured by Crane Company. This job involved the removal of gaskets containing asbestos, and the tasks of performing this job sometimes meant that asbestos dust would be created.

The worker was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in 2010, and he died close to one year later. Both the worker's wife and a dependent adult daughter were named as plaintiffs in this lawsuit.

It was argued by lawyers in this lawsuit that Crane knew of the dangers of asbestos exposure as early as the 1930s. Nevertheless, Crane never stopped using asbestos in its products until the late 1980s - at least with products warnings attached.

It bears mentioning that several other parties besides Crane were held accountable by the jury for the asbestos exposure as well. Asbestos injury cases often come down to the pointing of fingers at other parties concerning the assigning of blame. It's because of this that lawyers representing injured clients need to make certain that all parties are named to the lawsuit. This is not always an easy task.

Besides being a father and husband, the deceased worker formerly had volunteered to drive children back and forth to the Shriners' Hospital located in Pennsylvania. His attorney noted how the worker "was determined throughout his life to help other people struggling under difficult circumstances."

Sadly, it appears that he was never warned about the dangers he was exposed to during the years of his employment.
