State officials close another pharmacy since fungal meningitis outbreak

The current outbreak of fungal meningitis has killed 25 and sickened 344. After a surprise inspection, a specialty compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts has closed because of concerns with sterility. Infusion Resource has closed because of unsanitary conditions. They prepare sterile, injectable medications for patients and were caught administering injections which they were not licensed to do. Infusion Resource voluntarily surrendered their pharmacy license. The Executive Director said they will work on making the environment sterile and fixing things like a broken window to ensure the safety of the drugs.

Two other pharmacies had previously closed in Massachusetts after being linked to the current outbreak of fungal meningitis. The New England Compounding Center and Ameridose have both closed and are being investigated. The England Compounding Center not only has stopped production but has also recalled all of its products because it is believed they are responsible for contaminated steroids which are causing fungal meningitis. They shipped out around 17,000 vials of methylprednisolone acetate, steroids injected for pain, and patients are getting fungal meningitis because of a fungus that had contaminated the vials.

Fungal meningitis occurs when a fungus affects the membranes of the brain and spinal cord lining. Patients are experiencing symptoms one to four weeks after receiving the injection. Symptoms are milder than other types of meningitis but are just as deadly. If you or a loved one received an injected steroid and experience signs of symptoms of fever, headache, numbness, nausea and vomiting, pain and swelling at the site of the injection, weakness and stiff neck, officials are encouraging you to get checked immediately.
