Pennsylvania pregnant woman dies due to delay in care

A 24-year old pregnant woman in Pennsylvania recently died while under the care of medics. It is claimed that the woman, who was in the 37th week of her pregnancy, fell down some stairs. After a 911 call was made, delays and mistakes made in treating the woman may have resulted in oxygen deprivation and her not receiving the care that she needed.

It was asserted that the 911 call reported that the woman was asthmatic, had trouble breathing and had in the past been treated for a blood clot. Nevertheless, a video shows the medics entering the home without medical equipment, and that there appeared to be a considerable delay before the woman was actually brought out to the ambulance and before the ambulance proceeded to the hospital.

Matters went from bad to worse. Apparently, the medics were unable to get the ambulance doors open for three or four minutes after it arrived at the hospital. A doctor was able to get inside of the ambulance and start working upon the woman, but sometime during the process the woman's heart stopped beating. She died before anyone could get her inside of the hospital facility.

Fortunately, the child did survive due to an emergency cesarean section. Still, the family believes that the availability of oxygen may have kept the child's mother alive.

Emergency providers provide an important role in medical care, and these individuals require the same level of ability, training and expertise as other medical providers. As such, medical malpractice attorneys will move to have emergency providers accountable for their mistakes as well.

The above circumstance was tragic and might have been avoided. Hopefully, the death of the young woman will be a wake-up call for other medical facilities to make certain such mistakes are never made again.
