Fungal meningitis outbreak claims 24th victim

The 24th person has died from the current outbreak of fungal meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a resident of Indiana was exposed to the contaminated vials that are linked to fungal meningitis. The New England Compounding Center, responsible for the tainted vials of methylprednisolone acetate, have recalled all of their products and quit production while being investigated. It is unknown how the fungus got into the vials.

Fungal meningitis affects the membranes around the brain and spinal cord lining. Patients are experiencing milder symptoms than the other types of meningitis and have stated that they don't experience symptoms until a few weeks after receiving the injection. Symptoms include fever, weakness, vision changes, nausea and vomiting, weakness, pain and swelling at the site of the injection, headache and slurred speech.

Over 300 people have reported infections and 24 have died from the contaminated vials in 17 states. Around 17,000 vials had been shipped to 23 states. So far, Tennessee has the most number of cases and deaths out of all the states affected by the outbreak.
