Former Pennsylvania university employee files asbestos lawsuit

A longtime employee of a private Pennsylvania university has filed a federal lawsuit against 30 companies, alleging that they caused him to be exposed to asbestos in the course of his employment. As such, he claims, those companies are responsible for his eventual asbestos-related disease diagnosis. The university is not named in the lawsuit, with the man focusing solely on the companies that he claims mined, processed, manufactured, imported and sold the asbestos products to which he was exposed.

According to the asbestos lawsuit, the man worked in the powerhouse at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, from 1972 to 2010, during which time he maintained a coal-fired boiler and furnace. Prior to his employment at Bucknell, the man was in the U.S. Navy for four years, serving as a boiler technician on three naval ships.

During his employment, the suit states, the man was repeatedly exposed to products containing asbestos. The companies that produced and sold those products, he claims, failed to provide him with protective apparel, failed to effectively warn him of the dangers of asbestos exposure, failed to adopt an asbestos safety plan, and failed to remove those dangerous asbestos products from the workplace.

As a result, the man was continuously and repeatedly exposed to harmful asbestos products throughout his nearly 40-year employment. That asbestos exposure caused him to contract an unspecified asbestos-related disease, which has caused him to suffer great pain, to incur significant medical expenses and to lose wages. He is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages to account for these personal and financial losses.
