CDC: 11 more cases tied to fungal meningitis outbreak

The cases of fungal meningitis from the current outbreak continue to rise. It has risen by 11 making the total number of cases 328. Five of the cases are related to peripheral joint infections. Fungal meningitis is being linked to the contaminated vials of methylprednisolone acetate that was shipped out by the compounding pharmacy out of Framingham, Massachusetts, the New England Compounding Center. The company has since shut down production and recalled all of its products while under investigation.

Symptoms of fungal meningitis include headache, fever, nausea and vomiting, numbness, stiff neck, weakness and pain and swelling at the site of the injection. Patients are also experiencing peripheral joint infection from receiving the injection in joints, shoulders and knees. This can cause long term damage and even the need for joint replacement surgery. Officials are asking patients who received injection after May 2012 to get check as soon as they can. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a list of all of the offices and clinics that received the tainted vials of steroids.
