Another multi-million dollar asbestos verdict

In recent years, juries in Pennsylvania and across the country have been rendering a number of million dollar verdicts in asbestos-related cases. Now a jury has recently delivered a $12 million verdict for an individual that is still alive, but is suffering from mesothelioma.

The plaintiff in this matter was a shipbuilder who was reportedly exposed to asbestos through much of his career. His case is significant in that the diagnosis for mesothelioma was relatively recent - October of 2011. Sadly, most victims of mesothelioma only survive for approximately one year after the disease is diagnosed.

The shipbuilder was exposed to asbestos during World War II as a member of the United States Air Force, while later working in a shipyard, and still later while working as a radar technician where he fitted Coast Guard cutters with various fire-retardant materials. While working at the shipyard and as a radar technician, he was apparently exposed to airborne asbestos. He was never warned during any of this time about the presence of asbestos.

The difficulty in trying asbestos cases comes about in part due to the exposure occurring at more than one location. Attorneys that take on such clients often are required to file claims against any number of defendants.

Attorneys represent such individuals because of the significant injury inflicted due to asbestos exposure. Lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma are only some of the harmful health effects that can be brought on by asbestos exposure - and in almost all cases, there is little that doctors can do to treat the ailment once the disease is diagnosed.
