Workers may have been exposed to asbestos on the job

A number of cleanup workers originally filed a case in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania close to a decade ago concerning possible exposure to asbestos, PCBs and a number of other hazards. The case was originally transferred before being dismissed and now being refilled in a circuit court in the neighboring state of West Virginia.

A number of contract workers were asked to demolish a number of condensers at an electrical company. According to their complaint, they were originally told that the condensers did not contain asbestos or other contaminants - a contention that turned out to be incorrect.

While demolishing the condensers, the contractors were forced to breath in fine clouds of dust and debris from using chop saws on the condensers. Also, the workers claim to have been exposed to smoke from attempts by others to burn insulating material that had been removed from the condensers, and the insulating material apparently contained asbestos.

Asbestos and PCBs both contain cancer-causing compounds, and such materials are especially dangerous when breathed into the lungs. The courts will ultimately have to make the determination as to whether such exposure did occur, but if the contractors allegations are correct this matter is anything but a frivolous claim.

Workers often retain attorneys in such matters because their employers are often careless about worker safety. Exposure to materials such as asbestos can be deadly for the workers, and the injuries incurred can lead to long term suffering as well.

The contractors in this matter did indicate that medical problems had been experienced due to the exposure. However, the extent of such problems has not yet been specified. Hopefully, the medical problems do not include incurable lung cancer, mesothelioma or asbestosis.
