Another multi-million dollar verdict in birth injury case

A jury recently brought back a $78.5 million verdict in a Pennsylvania court where medical malpractice was alleged in a birth injury case. In a neighboring state, another jury just brought back a $9 million verdict in a birth injury case as well.

In the most recent case, a doctor recommended the mother undergo induction of labor. Because the mother suffered from gestational diabetes, it is alleged that she should have undergone a Cesarean Section instead. And since no amniocentesis was conducted to check for lung functioning or other abnormalities concerning the fetus, the two attending physicians apparently did not immediately recognize complications that were occurring during labor.

The baby was thus born with a loss of nearly half of her blood, nonfunctioning kidneys and severe brain damage due to lack of oxygen. The child has since had to undergo two kidney transplants while also suffering from cerebral palsy. To date, the family has so far spent more than $1.75 million in medical costs for the child's care. It is believed that an additional $8 million may have to be spent for the child's continuing medical needs.

If birth injuries do occur because of a medical mistake, parents of the child would be strongly advised to contact an attorney experienced in the medical malpractice area. Virtually no family can afford to spend out-of-pocket millions of dollars for medical expense. And when it comes to cases of brain damage occurring due to birth injuries, the child will likely require around the clock care for the rest of her life.

Because the costs of such malpractice are enormous and because such children badly suffer, doctors that are negligent in the delivery of such children need to be held accountable. Otherwise, such injuries are likely to occur again and again.
