The costs of asbestos abatement

Anyone in the Pittsburgh building trades business understands the costs that go into asbestos abatement procedures. If the costs seem exorbitant it's only because the cost of asbestos related disease and injury is far, far greater.

Unfortunately, such asbestos abatement procedures are needed in old school houses, apartment buildings, churches and other public gathering places where a large number of individuals may have been exposed to the presence of asbestos. Of additional concern is that workers conducting asbestos cleanup projects are also subjected to risks of asbestos exposure.

We shouldn't be shocked when it costs $360,000 on an asbestos abatement project for a former Pittsburgh area nursing home that is scheduled to be torn down. Similarly it will cost $125,000 to clean up a former historic theater. These were all structures where a large number of occupants could have been injured.

Such buildings eventually do need to be torn down, and when such buildings are torn down the danger exists that the asbestos fibers will go airborne. But another reason besides simple dilapidation that the building needs to be torn down is that it may no longer be possible to prevent occupants of such buildings from being exposed to asbestos fibers in the air.

In nearly every single post we have written about asbestos we've reminded readers about the health consequences of exposure to asbestos. These include mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer - all long term maladies that almost always lead to prolonged suffering and death. Because the consequence of such exposure is extreme is why attorneys are being retained by their clients injured or sickened by asbestos.
