Woman's asbestos exposure through her husband?

A Pittsburgh woman has brought a wrongful death action against 63 separate companies due to her mother's illness and death that was attributed to asbestosis and mesothelioma. Her mother's exposure was unusual as it likely came about due to exposure through her mother's husband who had routinely handled asbestos as a part of his employment.

The woman's father had worked both in a gas station and as a carpenter throughout the West Virginia area. Unfortunately, such exposure in any number of types of occupation is quite common, and the real dangers of such exposure have only recently been revealed in part because symptoms of asbestos exposure are not immediately forthcoming.

It will be interesting to see the end result of the above litigation. If exposure to asbestos can come about second hand - which I would assume is being alleged here - rather than through the direct handling of the substance, there will likely be no end to this type of litigation. It would indicate that the dangers of asbestos exposure - which are already enormous - are even more widespread than what anyone has previously imagined.

We already know that asbestos exposure can lead to asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma. What's worse, the adverse health effects from such exposure may not occur for years or even decades. Asbestos exposure is a hidden danger that needs to be taken seriously by manufacturers because of the dangers that such materials present.

Sadly, safety cautions and procedures are not always enough to prevent exposure from occurring. In certain cases it may take the threat of litigation for manufacturers to take the asbestos health care risks seriously.
